10 Years of Fame
The Andy Warhol Museum will kick off a year's activities to celebrate their
10th Anniversary. Thanks to the bequest of the artist, Andy Warhol, the
museum was able to open and become both a historic archive of his papers and an
artistic joy for those who find his art provocative and enjoyable.

Warhol marched to his own beat creating some dynamic works that didn't, as is typical with innovators,
fit the then accepted norms. It wasn't
his style.
Flowers Observed, Flowers Transformed

May 16 through September 5, 2004
Flowers Observed, Flowers Transformed leads the festivities
honoring one of the consistent themes throughout the artist's resume
John W. Smith, Exhibition Curator and Assistant Director of Collections and
Research explains. "The motif of flowers is one that attracted Andy Warhol
for more than 30 years. In his commercial work from the 1950s he approached the
subject much like the 17th Dutch still life painters did. In the 1960s however,
he approached the subject more abstractly, transforming daisies and hibiscus
flowers into Technicolor, Pop Art blooms."
Flowers Observed is an exploration of the realistic portrayal of flora in
their natural settings. Features artists include Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard
Manet, Ernst Stuven, Robert and Florine Stettheimer. Added to still-life paintings will be decorative
vases, plates, porcelain tea sets and silver pieces from the Tiffany Archive and
the Carnegie Museum of Art.
Warhol's 1974 series of Ikebana Flower Arrangements prints will be a
highlight.
Scientific examinations of flowers is featured with the Sienna-tinted
photographs of floral arrangements by Adolphe Braun. The Carnegie Museum of
Natural History is providing scientific flower specimens to round out completing
the floriculture exhibition.

Abstract art is a "must have" when organizing an exhibit on Andy
Warhol. This portion contains works that starts with the subject matter of
flowers and travels into the unique visionary styles of Ross Bleckner, Alex Katz
and Polly Apfelbaum.
Decorative arts like the wallpaper of Trenton Doyle Hanock and Jim Hodge's
Floral curtain are examples of art stepping outside the tradition norms.
