Surrealist master Salvador Dali occasionally turned his incredible talents to serious reproductions, though this was done late in his career usually with biblical or historical themes.
|
In 1966 Dali was commissioned to create lithographs that would mark the 20th Anniversary of the State of Israel occurring two years later when his works would be released.
|
Dali's twenty-five originals were painted in gouache and mixed media. Mourlot of Paris
printed twelve of lithographs. The other thirteen were printed by Wolfensberger of Zurich.
Two hundred and fifty sets were printed for commercial distribution.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery's lithographs are signed artist proofs.

The Aliyah Suite is Hebrew for "Ascension to Zion (Jerusalem)". The imagery is rife
with revolutionary fervor and religious conviction.
Dali entwined biblical texts with references to the Second World War.
|
Five years after the success of the Aliyah Suite Dali created his monumental Twelve Tribes of Israel
portfolio that also commemorated the history of Israel.
