Gaugin's influence had a marked effect on Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. The Dane studied at the Copenhagen Academy; viewing an exhibit of French Contemporary art then on display in his homeland caused him to journey to Paris where, in 1890, he first met the noted Symbolist artist.

Paul Gauguin taught him canvas preparation techniques, mixing colors, the art of wood panel carving and decorating the same with polychrome. While in Paris he met other Symbolist artists including Paul Serusier and Odilon Redon. Their influence brought a change in his painting style when he began to create strongly decorated works. Willumsen had works in the 1891 Parisian Salon des Independents. He also exhibited with the Nabis Group at the Impressionist and Symbolist show at LeBarc de Boutteville's gallery.

Jens Ferdinand Willumsen followed up these successes with a decade of exploration of wood working, sculpture and architecture. By 1913 he became known for his brilliant color range aided by his multiple trips to Spain and Tunis and learning from their extensive dye making techniques. It added another alteration in his style akin to his fellow Scandinavian Edvard Munch.
