Installation Art

Christo, the 'wrap artist' is best know for installation art. His is a household name because of his numerous projects that capture international attention such as The Gates, a New York City based project. Fascinating, guaranteed to bring press interest and curious crowds for each event such as the upcoming Over the River Project for the Arkansas River in Colorado currently scheduled for 2010 at the earliest.

Installation art often incorporates materials and resources from the specific site. The exhibit has, like most, a set time frame and the work is dismantled. Sometimes pieces are sold off, such as the fabric used to make The Gates, otherwise the artist may sell preparatory drawings in order to finance the work. For most, breaking even is a sufficient goal.

There are galleries that specialize in this unique conceptual genre such as Pittsburgh's Mattress Factory.

For nearly thirty years the Mattress Factory has provided two Pittsburgh locales where artists are provided an opportunity to explore their creativity, often through a residency program. Artists travel to Pittsburgh and reside at the museum while they create installation specific work using a variety of media. The Mattress Factory houses some permanent collections along with site specific installation that alter throughout the year. Just one of the locations that encourage this exciting artistic endeavor.
