Velázquez
One of the most respected artists the world ever knew, Diego Rodrigez de Silva y Velázquez, was recently the subject of his first
ever exhibit in England at London's National Gallery. The exhibit closes on January 21, 2007.
Such an important exhibit would be bereft without a catalogue to delve further into the artist and his incredible works. Many of the
works are from the National Gallery's own collection, supplemented from the rich holdings of the Prado
Velázquez was court painter for Philip IV of Spain. Wisely, as others did before him, he painted the Royal family using tricks of light and shadow to
illustrate they were the ones in power. He impressed the Spanish Hapsburg King so much with his first portrait that, at age 24, Philip IV declared only
Velázquez should paint his portrait.
Noted Velázquez scholars Dawson Carr, Xavier Bray, John Elliott, Larry Keith and Javier Portus each contributed to this absorbing insight into the Spanish master.
