British photographer and surrealist painter Stella Snead fled wartime Europe for the United States. In the 1940's she had several exhibits of her paintings in her adopted country.

They featured her preferred subject of night time landscapes enhanced with fantastic animals. Within a decade she abandoned painting following a bout of depression, and turned to photography as her creative outlook. She  produced numerous books on life in India such as Shiva's Pigeons: An Experience of India and Animals in Four Worlds: Sculptures from India.

Russian born artist Pavel Tchelichew (also spelled Tschelitchew) began his career as a set designer for the ballet in Paris before he moved to New York City and became fascinated with the surrealist art movement.
