Caillebotte is often remembered for the financial support that he provided to his fellow impressionists
such as Claude Monet rather than his own artwork. That's unfortunate given some of the outstanding
paintings he created.

grew up in the Parisian upper class. As a youth he summered in Yerres, and later used that locale as

Edgar Degas was the first among the Impressionists to meet and befriend Caillebotte. This meeting took
place in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition. He joined the group for their second exhibition
in 1876 and among his works displayed was Floor Scrapers. Some, including the officials of the Paris
Salon, found the work "vulgar"; and rejected it.
Many of his best known works are of urban scenes of Paris such as
Paris Street; Rainy Day.
Unlike the other Impressionists, Caillebotte's inheritance and earlier allowance removed the pressures the
other artists felt to sell their works in order to survive. Throughout his life he supported Claude
Monet, Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro by his purchase of their works.
